Kelal Pay lets guests pay for food and drinks
at the event by scanning a
Cashier QR code on the bartenderβs phone. It is separate from buying a ticket (though you can also pre-order menu items when purchasing a ticket β see
Menu management).
Two ways guests pay for menu items
| Method |
When |
How |
| Pre-order with ticket |
Before the event (ticket checkout) |
Select menu items when buying a ticket; paid items are added to the ticket total in one payment |

Guest scans Cashier QR β enters amount β pays via Kelal Pay gateways |
For members β paying with Kelal Pay
- Sign in to Kelal Gateway (registered member with phone on profile).
- Open the menu β tap PAY (or go to /pay).
- Tap Scan Cashier QR code and point your camera at the cashierβs QR on their screen.
- Confirm you are connected to the correct event.
- Enter the menu item total (ETB) the bartender told you (required).
- Optionally add a tip.
- Tap PAY and choose your payment method.
- Complete payment in Telebirr, CBEBirr, M-PESA, or another supported gateway.
- The cashier sees a paid or canceled confirmation on their device in real time.
Supported Kelal Pay gateways
- Telebirr β mobile money
- CBEBirr Plus β CBE Birr wallet
- M-PESA
- AwashBirr Pro
- NIBTera β NIB Mobile Banking
- EBIRR β COOP Bank of Oromia
CBE (Commercial Bank account mobile/internet banking) may show as coming soon β use another method if prompted.
Kelal Pay connects to a live cashier session. If you leave or cancel, the bartender is notified. You can tap Scan a different Cashier to switch stations.
For organizers β setup before the event
1 Configure your menu
After launch, open Event Dashboard β Edit Menu. Add food and drink items with optional prices. See the Menu management section for free vs paid items and menu reports.
2 Assign bartender / cashier staff
From Staff & role management, assign team members by phone number. They must be registered members with the app installed and a completed profile.
Recommended roles for Kelal Pay:
- Bartender / Cashier β can scan free-drink QR codes and run Cashier (paid) mode
- Bartender β drink scanning focus (cashier features depend on role permissions)
Staff must accept the invitation notification before their shift.
3 Start the event
Tap Start Event on the Event Dashboard. Scanners, bartenders, and Kelal Pay cashier QR only work while status is ACTIVE. See Event control.
For bartenders & cashiers β on event day
After accepting your staff role, open your staff position (from the notification or your positions list) β this opens the Scanner screen for that event.
Bartender mode β free drinks
- Tap Bartender (Free Drinks) β Start QR Scanner.
- Scan the guestβs free drink QR from their ticket or VIP drink invitation.
- Approve or decline when the app shows the guest name and drink details.
Cashier mode β Kelal Pay (paid menu)
- Tap Cashier (Paid Drinks).
- The app generates a Cashier QR code β show this QR to the guest (keep the screen visible).
- Tell the guest the menu total in ETB (and tip if applicable).
- Guest scans with Menu β PAY on their phone and completes payment.
- You receive a popup: Payment received (amount, tip, member name) or Payment canceled.
- Generate a new Cashier QR for the next guest if needed.
Tip for busy bars: One cashier phone = one active QR session. For multiple lines, assign several Bartender / Cashier staff so each has their own QR.
Free drink QR vs Kelal Pay
- Free drink QR β guest shows QR from My Tickets / notifications; bartender scans it (no ETB payment).
- Kelal Pay β guest scans the cashierβs QR and pays ETB through a gateway.
Troubleshooting
- Invalid Cashier QR β guest must scan the QR from the Cashier screen, not a ticket or drink QR.
- Scanner / Pay not working β confirm the organizer has tapped Start Event.
- Staff cannot open Scanner β staff must accept the role and use an ACTIVE event assignment.
- Payment stuck β guest should return to PAY after completing Telebirr/CBEBirr; the app checks payment status automatically.
- Camera blocked β allow camera permission for Kelal Gateway in phone settings.
